[uCsimm] Built 2.4 but booting gives Attempted to kill init

I have followed the excellent instructions from Bernhard Kuhn to
build a 2.4.x kernel for my new uCsimm module. I have followed through
the procedure to produce a rom-able image. However, when I try to boot
it I get the display below.

Note that the prebuilt image downloaded from rcs.ei.tum.de works fine -
although I noticed that my kernel doesn't print the line:

"Mount-cache hash table entries: 512 (order 0,4096 bytes)"

when it boots, and wonder if this is anything to do with the problem.

It also says "2.4.0.0pre0" whereas the prebuilt one says "2.4.6.0pre0"

Any suggestions much appreciated. I'm relatively new to building and
compiling kernels of any type and I find the downloading, patching
and configuring bewildering to say the least!
