[uCsimm] Problem writing to /dev/ttyS0

This is an update on a problem I am having. I am trying
to talk to some external of equipment via /dev/ttyS0.

The scope shows that when a packet of data is being received
(512 bytes worth), the uCsimm transmits a lot (say 1500 bytes)
of data and will sometimes crash.

Is it possible that /dev/console is getting in the way, and if so
what can I do about it?

I have stopped the getty running on /dev/ttyS0

TIA
