If I recall correctly, the major (or was it minor..?) number of /dev/console
changed between kernel 2.0 and 2.2
I believe the console is handles entirely different in 2.2 (and of course in
2.4) , because the virtual /dev/pts filesystem was introduced in 2.2.
/dev/console on my desktop machine (which ran 2.4) is major 5, minor 1
