If you'll consider changing the filesystem: genromfs gnerates a disk
image from a filesystem tree. For the mknod problem, I believe there is
a solution in newer genrmofs versions. Or you could try to use fakeroot
(comes packaged with Debian, don't know about other distros), this does
allow you to do most root operations without you being root.
