Yes I realized that *after* sent the email off.  :-)  (dammit I *knew* I saw
a crt0.S somewhere where it looked really conspicuous... where was it?)

xgcc does exist.  Is this the failure I'm supposed to expect?

Thanks for your patience.  I'm determined to figure this thing out but I
just seem to be stuck.  :-(
