  Yep. We are trying to do something similar here.

  Basically, what we are devising is a PCMCIA adapter for a Sierra Aircard 
that understands AT modem commands through the PCMCIA serial port layer.

  There are also some single-chip 802.11 transceivers out there but it only 
makes sense to use them if you are going to do huge production runs.
